NECA has raised with the Electrical Regulatory Authorities Council (ERAC) certain safety issues around the retrofitting of T8 (fluoro tubes) replacement LED tubes. It is expected that as client’s become more energy efficiency conscious that this new technology will become more popular.

The retrofitting of a LED replacement tube may not be a straight forward operation and can require the fitting of an inline HRC fuse within the luminaire and approval of the modified unit.

The electrical regulators (ERAC) have since undertaken further investigations and provided useful guidelines for all involved.

ERAC has issued a bulletin expressing serious concerns with electrical safety issues of both the LED tubes and T5/T8 fluorescent lamp adaptor assemblies. These concerns are not limited to the lamp products themselves but are also concerned that the modifications carried out to existing luminaires changes their specification and may present a significant risk if an attempt is made to refit a standard fluoro tube.
